Five other members of the team were wounded in the blast. According
to police, an explosive device planted in the team’s bus exploded. "Three of
the players who sustained very serious wounds will be flown to Mogadishu for
extra medical care” Somali Football Federation executive committee member, Abdisamad
Sheik Qasim, who is following their situation said.
The bus was carrying JCCI FC players who were on their way
to the Waamo Stadium which was relaunched today after being redeveloped under
the FIFA Forward project. Somali Football Federation is sending its heartfelt
condolence to the families and relatives of those killed and to the entire
football family of Somalia. SFF wishes the wounded players a speedy recovery.
"We call on the federal government of Somalia and the Jubaland regional authorities to investigate this unacceptable and barbaric attack against footballers and suddenly bring the perpetrators to justice” Somali Football Federation said in a statement.
