Now, nearly 30 years after, the once well-known football
club in Somalia is going to make its first international appearance. Today,
Wednesday 14th of August has marked a huge history for the team
which flew to Morocco for this year’s edition of Arab Champions Cup, now named
after Mohamed VI Cup of Champions.
Somalia’s Horseed Sports Club, has been drawn in group A
with three other teams from Iraq, Bahrain and hosts Morocco. Somali Football
Federation president, Abdiqani Said Arab, who has seen the team’s delegation
off at Mogadishu’s Aden Abdulle International airport on Wednesday, said that
this year’s competition is different from previous playoff events adding that
this makes the tournament more interesting.
"Horseed was the most powerful club in Somalia. It won most Premier league titles and as a result it represented Somalia in most of club competitions abroad. Whenever I travelled abroad for football business football veterans always asked me about Horseed. Now I am very jubilant that such a question about Horseed will never come back again as the team is making its first international appearance in nearly 30 years.” SFF president Abdiqani Said Arab, noted as he talked to the media at the airport prior to Horseed’s departure to Morocco on Wednesday.
"Today is a great day for Somalia and as well as for Horseed, as it will reappear in the international platform nearly three decades after it went off radar” SFF president added. He told the old Club’s players to buckle down to repossess the team’s lost name and publicity. The delegation is led by Somali Football Federation executive committee member Omar Mohamud Nor.
